Added in 1966 to American folklore was the Mothman, a creature or being that originally appeared in West Virginia. When it appears, it usually does so as a harbinger of death or disaster. Materializing as a humanoid being whose form looks similar to a man-sized moth, yet its manifestation is ominous. In 2002, the movie, THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, based off an experience by reporter John Keel arrived with great buzz.
Washington Post reporter John Klein and his wife get into a car accident after viewing new homes. When she claims she saw the “mothman,” John begins to try to decipher this strange phenomenon. After his wife passes away from cancer, he becomes filled with melancholy and removes himself from others. Off on assignment, he can’t explain how he landed up six hours away from his original destination. And soon he too may be in the grips of a supernatural being.
The film stars Richard Gere along with a great cast including Laura Linney, Will Patton, Alan Bates, and Debra Messing. Though not the success Hollywood had hoped, the movie has gained a steady cult following and has for some arrived as a staple for Halloween.
