Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 248: Killer Fish Fest – Piranha 3D (2010) and Piranha (1978)

Here it is, the last of Dark Discussions Podcast Killer Fish Fest episodes. Five episodes, six films. And this one is two films. First we have the 1978 Roger Corman produced and Joe Dante directed Piranha, and then we have the 2010 Alexandre Aja directed Piranha 3D. When Jaws blew up at the box office, numerous fish monster films began popping up, including Piranha, probably the most successful of the “follow ups”. Made on a small budget of $770,000 USD, it went on to make over $16 million at the box office.

In 2010, Dimension Films decided to produce a throwback film from the 1970’s with all the gore and grindhouse you’d see back in those days. Getting the hot French director Alexandre Aja on board who loved one of the original scripts by two guys named Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, the film was made for $24 million in 3D and became a huge hit making four times its cost at the box office.

Both films, though about killer piranha, are linked in name only. The 1978 film was about a military and government experiment that goes awry while the 2010 film is about prehistoric piranha locked away in a subterranean lake that break out after a minor tremor. Both films have been well received by critics and horror fans alike. Your co-hosts discuss two popular cult films and give their take.
